Of course, Jesus said it, and did it: "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." Notice that there's a large group excluded from this. Laying down your life for the enemy is not included in this catagory of "greatest love". We might even say it would be wasting your life.

Thank you for saying what I could never find the words for. No truer words I have never heard.
If I can, i would like to sum this up in my own words:
"It is a fine thing to die for ones freedom, it is a much finer thing to die for someone elses."
